Dr M Govender is passionate about education. Here are key health topics relevant to your child's wellbeing.
Feeding: Breast milk every 2–3 hours is ideal. It provides antibodies and nutrients perfectly suited to your newborn.
Safe sleeping: Always place your baby on their back. Keep the cot clear of bedding, pillows and toys.
First check-up: Schedule a visit within the first week after discharge for a full assessment.
Why vaccinate? Vaccines protect your child from serious diseases and help keep the whole community safe.
SA schedule: Starts at birth (BCG & Polio), with follow-ups at 6, 10, 14 weeks, then 6, 9, 12 and 18 months.
Missed doses? It's never too late — Dr M Govender can arrange a catch-up schedule.
38°C or above is a fever. Seek help immediately for any baby under 3 months.
Older children: See a doctor if the fever is very high, lasts more than 3 days, or comes with a rash, stiff neck or breathing trouble.
At home: Keep fluids up, dress lightly, and use paracetamol or ibuprofen. Never give aspirin to children.
Solids at 6 months: Start with iron-rich foods — pureed meat or fortified cereals — alongside breast milk or formula.
Growth monitoring: Regular check-ups track weight, height and development to catch any concerns early.
Healthy habits: Limit sugar and screen time. Offer a variety of fruits, vegetables and proteins from an early age.
Dr M Govender's practice is built on prevention over cure — regular check-ups, vaccinations and early screening give every child the best start in life.
